Ask SLO County to Ban Polystyrene

Please take a moment to write to our San Luis Obispo County decision-makers to ask them to prohibit the use of polystyrene items in the county by enacting Ordinance No. 2019-1.

The detrimental effects plastics have on our environment, ecosystem and health are well-researched and documented. Plastics are made out of fossil fuels and often contain harmful chemical additives that leach into our food, water and natural environments. Polystyrene products do not completely break down and instead pose a health risk to local wildlife for generations after their intended use. Source reduction is key and it’s time for San Luis Obispo County to take action.

The proposed polystyrene ordinance would ban polystyrene cups, utensils, plates, bowls, trays, clamshells, raw meat trays, raw fish trays, egg cartons and other products intended primarily for food service use, as well as coolers, containers, ice chests, unencapsulated marine buoys, unencapsulated dock floats, shipping boxes, packing peanuts and other packaging materials.
