Victory: Closed the loophole in the existing city packaging ordinance so that extra thick single-use plastic bags are no longer classified as reusable; added provisions so that food providers only provide polystyrene cutlery upon request.
The Charleston Chapter of Surfrider Foundation and allies are advocating for the City of Folly Beach to update its Single-Use Plastic Bags, Polystyrene Coolers, Containers and Cups ordinance. The goal is to close a loophole in its plastic bag ban that exempts extra-thick plastic bags and to add a provision that requires food providers to only provide polystyrene cutlery upon request. Extra thick single-use plastic bags are currently exempt from the ban because of a loophole in the definition of reusable carryout bag.
