Know Your H2O coordinator, Brad Snook, presented public comment to the South SLO County Sanitation District’s (SSLOCSD) Board of Directors on January 3rd regarding the district’s Brine Discharge program.
Surfrider SLO is concerned with transport of brine waste to the SSLOCSD, where a revised truck route has been implemented without in-depth environmental review and without a Coastal Development Permit. The chapter is also concerned with a potentially-inadequate brine sampling process and uncertain chain of custody for samples before the brine is discharged through the district’s ocean outfall.
We are pleased the Board of Directors agreed that district staff should work with Surfrider SLO to potentially improve their brine discharge process. Once complete, the chapter will report its findings and recommendations to the board. Stay tuned!
