The wastewater treatment plant at San Simeon is the subject of an upcoming California Coastal Commission agenda item.
The plant overlooks the beach and stands behind rip-rap (large rocks) placed there to reduce erosion of the bluff below the plant due to high tides and wave action, occasional storms, and rising sea levels.
The commission staff is reviewing the plant’s past Coastal Development Permit violations and recognizes the plant is in a dangerous tsunami zone and floodplain, and this site would not be permitted for construction of a sewage plant today.
Surfrider SLO supports the Managed Retreat of vital infrastructure not only in San Simeon, but elsewhere in places like Morro Bay (in progress) and South SLO County Sanitation District.
